Oxidation Removal

Oxidation Removal in Vero Beach, Florida, and the Treasure Coast

If a boat has a dull finish, or light patches on the gelcoat, or you see white powder on your fingers when you rub the surface, it will require compounding to revive the shine. Compounding is applying a thick, gritty paste (compound) to a surface and buffing with a rotary buffer. We offer boat compounding in Vero Beach, Florida, and the Treasure Coast.

Dull finishes usually require one pass of a cutting compound, followed by a pass with a lighter compound to remove all of the oxidation. Each pass we call a “step.” A powdery oxidation requires wet sanding before compounding. Wet sanding requires sanding with various grits, starting with a course grit followed by finer and finer grits of wet/dry sandpaper. Often, chalkiness is eliminated by one pass of a 1000 grit sandpaper.

After compounding and waxing.

Topside Boat Cleaning offers excellent boat compounding in Vero Beach, FL. The end result is a protected and beautiful looking boat!

I can also compound and protect your nonskid. Nonskid becomes oxidized as well as the smooth gelcoat on the hull and topside. The gunnel, just above the toe rail, as well as the console and the angled surfaces on the bow, are most directly exposed to sunlight and can need wet sanding and compounding before applying wax.

Sanding and compounding are time consuming processes in themselves. They are particularly difficult working on the hull when boats are on lifts, docked, or moored. In these cases, I must use an inflatable floating dock that I can maneuver around the boat.
